Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. A leading transcendentalist,he is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau was known for being a prolific writer, keeping journals from the age of 20 until shortly before his death. He wrote of his observations in nature, gleaned largely from his daily walks. He also was a man of strong opinions, which are included here. This first volume covers 10 years, starting at the age of twenty. - Summary by Wikipedia/Phyllis Vincelli
