Harper's Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other fun. This 30th issue of the serial was published on May 25th, 1880. In this issue, George Washington sets the tone for the new country and the presidency. In the continuing story, "Across the Ocean", the crew of the Arizona suffers a tragedy as they arrive in Hong Kong. Highlights of other stories in this issue include a boy who makes a heartbreaking sacrifice to help his mother and the birth of the mischievous Hermes whose winged shoes and hat help him bring good deeds (and sometimes trouble) wherever he traveled.
